BIM Takes Disney Project to New Heights

  • BIM Takes Disney Project to New Heights

Disney theme parks are renowned for imaginative design, so it comes without surprise that one of their latest projects is situated to break precedents.

Slated to open in 2015, the Enchanted Storybook Castle is currently being designed for Disney Shanghai Resort. It is taking cues from iconic Disney structures, but with more modern and complex features. The castle will come complete with a restaurant, a launching platform for fireworks, a boat ride, a childrens salon, fountain pumps, a grand staircase, and a maintenance facility.

Throughout the castle's construction process, the design team has found 3D modeling to be absolutely necessary. In addition to handling structural complexity and conveying the correct medieval attributes, the castle's design teams are based in both China and Glendale, California. Cloud collaboration through Building Information Modeling (BIM) has allowed the teams to more easily share their models, which has equated to less rework, and more refined detail.

In total, 142 architects, engineers, and contractors are working on the project. Designed in completely in Revit, the castle will stand greater than 200 feet tall, and be the central attraction of Shanghai Disneyland.
