BIM is a process, not a specific software. It stands for Building Information Modeling and the simplest description is sharing intelligent project information from one step to the next.

There are many software programs that play a role in the BIM process from concept, engineering, and delivery. For example, software like Revit, Envisioneer, ArchiCAD, (and more) produce a 3D model with intelligent objects that understand their place in the project. For instance, a wall could be made up of steel or wood studs, insulation, drywall, brick, (etc) and the 3D model contains all of those choices so that when the BIM file is sent forward to the next stage (ex. engineering) that software program can read the model properties, without redrawing the model, to determine what beams or columns are needed to support the structure, This continues from one software to the next saving valuable time where each program picks up where the previous technology left off.

I hope that helps!
