When Antoni Gaudí took over the project in the late 1800s, he threw out conventional architectural composition in favor of pure structural logic. The basilica doesn't follow typology or classical proportion, but works around the idea of force.

Gaudí hated drawing. Instead of sketching a design and hoping the structure could hold it up, he built physical models that solved the engineering for him. He'd hang a chain from two points and let it settle naturally under its own weight. Any hanging chain forms a catenary, the shape gravity alone produces, and that curve carries weight purely through tension. Flip it upside down, and tension becomes compression. A stone arch built in that exact shape can carry weight the same efficient way, no thick walls or buttresses required.

For the Sagrada Família, Gaudí scaled this into entire networks of chains and weighted bags hung from his workshop ceiling, one for every column, arch, and vault, all linked into a single system. Photographed and flipped right-side up, that structure revealed the ideal geometry for the whole church before a single stone was cut. Move one point, and the whole system resettled, giving him instant feedback long before computer modeling existed.

Gaudí died in 1926, which was already a huge setback for the project. An even bigger problem came a decade later, when Civil War destruction tore through much of his workshop. Models, drawings, and reference materials were lost or damaged beyond use. Everything that survived had to be interpreted, since so little of it could simply be followed.

That shift changed the nature of the project. From that point forward, the Sagrada Família became an ongoing act of reconstruction, piecing together a design system from partial evidence. In many ways, that condition still shapes the work today.

Progress crawled for most of the twentieth century. With documentation incomplete, the project leaned on traditional stonemasonry and moved forward one careful decision at a time. The dramatic speedup of recent decades comes down to several digital methods arriving together.


From craftsmanship to computation

Parametric modeling treated the basilica's geometry as a living system of relationships instead of a fixed set of drawings. BIM platforms brought design and construction coordination into one shared digital environment. CNC fabrication turned that digital geometry directly into cut stone components at a precision the earlier building phases never had access to. Structural analysis software, borrowed from aerospace and other advanced engineering fields, let the team validate complex, non-orthogonal load paths before a single stone goes up.

The material logic hasn't budged in all those years. What's different now is the level of control. Digital modeling can build structural behavior straight into the geometry and CNC cutting closes the gap between drawing and finished component, while post-tensioning and prefabrication let stone assemblies perform like engineered systems, built with the precision of an aerospace part rather than shaped purely by hand.


A structure that outlived its author

It's tempting to call the Sagrada Família an unfinished Gaudí building. It is a project that has outlived any single author. Every phase of construction has meant reconstructing intent from incomplete sources, and somehow the rdesign systems have stayed structurally faithful to Gaudí's original logic even as every tool involved has changed completely.


What survived wasn't a set of instructions, but a set of governing principles durable enough to carry across multiple generations of technology and more than a hundred years of construction. The Sagrada Família is a living example of architecture behaving like an ongoing system instead of a finished object.
