Located opposite the Finnish Parliament, the Oodi Helsinki Central Library was conceived as a “living room for the city.” ALA Architects clad the building in locally sourced Finnish spruce, forming a timber wave that brings warmth and texture to the urban fabric. Created by OMA and LMN Architects, the 11-story building organizes its diverse functions into distinct programmatic zones stacked vertically. These zones include the vibrant “Living Room” on the ground floor, the high-tech “Mixing Chamber” at mid-level, and the peaceful reading rooms above. A defining feature is the “Books Spiral,” a continuous ramp that preserves the Dewey Decimal system while allowing uninterrupted browsing across four floors.

The Beijing City Library, designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with ECADI, brings together biophilic design, structural expression, and cultural symbolism.

Its vast canopy roof, embedded with photovoltaic panels, is supported by slender tree-like columns inspired by the ginkgo, which is an symbol of wisdom and endurance in Chinese culture. Beneath this canopy unfolds a landscape of terraced reading zones, designed to mimic natural topography and invite exploration.
