New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is expanding their use of Autodesk software. The NMDOT is now including BIM in their toolbox!

We are looking forward to implementing the Autodesk solutions, said Alvin Dominguez, P.E., NMDOT Cabinet Secretary. The New Mexico Department of Transportation expects to pay for the software within two years of full implementation through cost savings realized in the reduction of change orders. The use of 3D modeling capabilities will improve our public input on projects promoting positive customer relations and needed transparency throughout our project development process

Dominguez statement clearly states the advantages of using BIM, which is fantastic to see! Other U.S. departments of transportation have also started using BIM, this really boils down to BIM helping to plan, design, build and manage infrastructure projects.

Autodesks BIM solutions will help NMDOT to:

Conduct what if analysis

Quantify material costs

See the simulations of construction

Minimize costs, for example by helping to accelerate construction time (reducing labour and machine time) and reduction of change orders

Would really like to see specific case studies on how BIM helped the New Mexico Department of Transportation, so we will keep an eye out if any are released.
