Contemporary insulation precedents

I'm in a wall section class and I have an assignment that requires: "Raise the level roof to R-49, walls to R-21 and floors to R-38, as if the project is located in a cold climate. " so I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of contemporary insulating precedents/technologies/materials/ideas that I can begin to research. thanks
