  • BIM is Unstoppable: What do Manufacturers Need to Know?
As Paul Morrell, the UK's chief adviser on construction points out, "BIM is unstoppable." Building Information Modeling has been around for decades, but "the need to deliver a low carbon future," while reducing overall costs has generated enthusiasm in leaving CAD systems behind. By 2016, 'Level 2 BIM' will be mandatory for all government projects in the United Kingdom, and eventually, practices like this will be seen worldwide. For building product manufacturers, what does this mean?

A monthly briefing by RIBA Insight illustrates everything manufacturers need to know. According to the study, "It's time to start investing in BIM; Manufacturers can be reassured that they dont need to commit to a single proprietary file format to create their product information as BIM objects. Proprietary restraints are disappearing."

BIM provides a world of information to manufacturers, as all specification objects are full of: "Maintenance schedules, contractual and guarantee information, embodied carbon estimates, location requirements, travel distances, installation instructions, personnel training, quantities, costs, storage, delivery times and recycling, and disposal suggestions, as well as the geometric parameters associated with traditional CAD."

How can manufacturers start incorporating BIM practices? Modlar is here to help! By assembling all the information associated with a manufacturer's building products, we can create a family of BIM objects, and place products in front of over 50,000 specifiers.

If you're a building product manufacturer, don't get left behind. The earlier your products become available in 3D BIM formats, the earlier they will be used by architects, engineers, contractors, and designers. Visit Modlar.com/Sales, and streamline your specification process now!
